For Hiroaki Umeda, physical appearance is a key compositional element. The twenty-six-year-old choreographer-dancer has attracted the attention of critics and public through his astonishing gestural vocabulary, a language of ruptures and lyricism, evocative of the turbulence and chaos of civilization.
S20 is presenting while going to a condition with a set stripped to its bare essentials, where projected images are the sole source of light, Hiroaki Umeda concentrates on those phenomena which, despite ourselves, transform our body and environment. Amidst this confusion, he explores the nature of ambiguity through a series of movements—sometimes fluid, sometimes syncopated—which respond to the repetitive hammer-strokes of the sounds and images. In an electrifying performance, he reaches the realm of emotion though the intellect.
